UNA BAND VERA. E GRANDE
E' GIA' PRIMAVERA quando i Metallica tornano sul palco, nel 1983. E' il vecchio covo, lo Stone di San Francisco, a riabbracciare i suoi ragazzacci, che tanto infiammano la folla del pub. James sale sul palco accompagnato da Lars, Dave e Cliff, e lo show inizia con l'incendiaria Hit The Lights. La raffica procede con The Mechanix, tra una rullata di Lars e un contorto riff di Mustaine. Tra i pezzi più duri, Motorbreath e No Remorse. Quando parte Seek & Destroy, già un inno, il pubblico si agita e James lo surriscalda. Un assolo di Cliff prepara il terreno (minato) per WhipLash, prima che tre cover e l'agitata Metal Militia concludano una serata di fuoco! La stagione prosegue nell'infuocata Baia di Frisco, ancora allo Stone. Mai banali, sempre terrificanti: gli show della band scatenano sempre grandi sensazioni, soprattutto quando lo fanno in casa. Il tour di KEA vedeva i Metallica supportati dai Raven che pubblicizzavano il loro 'All For One'. Il tour, che fu dunque battezzato 'Kill'Em All For One Tour', fu uno dei più sfrenati. Ricorda James che 'Una mattina si ruppe l'aria condizionata dell'auto in pieno deserto. C'erano 90° lì dentro, la mattina ti svegliavi con la lingua appiccicata al palato!'. Il tour partì il 27 luglio dal Royal Manor, nel New Jersey, e si spostò lentamente ad ovest toccando Boston, Yonkers, Jamestown, Buffalo, Rochester, l'Arkansas. Seguirono date in Texas, Oklahoma, New Messico. Il caldo torrido del luglio americano vede il combo californiano sempre più consapevole dei propri mezzi. James è il leader della formazione, e forse nemmeno lui crede al fatto di essere diventati una band 'vera'. Ma la splendida realtà diventa evidente col trasferimento a New York: la band diventa presto una band culto dell'underground cittadino. Per quanto giovani, i Metallica avevano già imparato come strutturare bene e in modo vario le setlist dei loro concerti: un'opener classica ormai marchio di fabbrica (Hit The Lights) seguita subito da un pezzo rovente ma complesso -The Four Horsemen, il più strutturato dei primi album- , poi dopo la più orecchiabile delle prime song (Jump In The Fire) via con macigni thrashy come No Remorse e Whiplash. Il tutto condito e intervallato dall'assolo di Cliff e da quello di Kirk. Salutata Baltimora, i Metallica si esibiranno per la prima volta a Chicago, nell'Illinois. Il tour diventa presto probante, visto che dopo una notte a Milwaukee i nostri tengono tre date in Arizona, una in Oklahoma e 5 in Texas senza soluzione di continuità: vai e vieni, da uno stato all'altro, prima di passare anche per il New Mexico. Nonostante gli scherzi e l'allegria generale, non cala l'impegno, on the road ma non solo. Cinque mesi dopo l'uscita di KEA, i ragazzi iniziarono a scrivere dei pezzi nuovi. Uno in particolare venne proposto quella notte a Las Cruces: era una lunga composizione epica e strumentale chiamata 'When Hell Freezes Over', improvvisata con fluidità. Verrà chiamata 'The Call Of Ktulu' dopo un annetto e diverse modifiche. Salutato il New Mexico, i Metallica tornano nella loro California. La band aveva una presenza scenica straordinaria, di grande impatto visivo. James e gli altri avevano il desiderio di fare il massimo per la band, e con spettacoli senza fronzoli ed effetti speciali si guadagnarono un grandissimo rispetto dei fans. E poi, ovviamente c'era la loro grande potenza e aggressività. Il pubblico andava in delirio quando i Met si scatanavano nei loro headbanging. Il tour di KEA è stato una gran baldoria per i Metallica. Memorabili le grandi bevute post concerto con gli amici Armored Saint, gli scherzi e le marachelle dei giovani metallari. La conclusione del tour coincise con le trionfali esibizioni nella natia California, su tutte allo Stone di San Francisco. Casa Metallica. Nelle ultime date del tour la band ebbe come aiuto roadie John Marshall, chitarrista dei Metal Church: fu l'inizio di una lunga amicizia. Il freddo novembre 1983 si infiamma presto. Già nella prima data del mese, a Reseda, i Metallica sfoderano il secondo pezzo nuovo dopo When Hell Freezes Over. E' thrash allo stato puro, cola energia e pare dinamita sparata a velocità assurda, in pieno stile Kill'Em All. Si chiama Fight Fire With Fire, e in quella scaletta così potente e veloce fa una figura impetuosa. Come se ci fosse sempre stata!
NOVITA'. Il 7 novembre a San Francisco avviene qualcosa di davvero speciale nella storia dei Metallica. Naturale che una data così importante si celebri allo Stone, il vecchio covo della band. Per la prima volta la serata è aperta da un brano molto western di Ennio Morricone, The Ecstasy Of Gold. Le luci soffuse e i Metallica che appaiono di spalle al pubblico mentre l'intro svanisce creano un'atmosfera da brividi: poi i quattro esplodono Hit The Lights e inizia la bolgia. Il thrash scorre furente sulle note di The Four Horsemen, prima che arrivi l'ora del nuovo: Fight Fire, certo, ma soprattutto un duello di chitarre strepitoso che si delinea in una canzone che viene chiamata Ride The Lightning! Le sorprese non sono finite, e infatti il pubblico va in delirio. La scaletta è molto più lunga del solito: Seek & Destroy finisce a metà, e dopo un solo di cliff e l'immancabile Whiplash arriva un altro cazzottone tutto nuovo e travolgente: Creeping Death, un bombardamento da capogiro. Metal Militia dovrebbe mettere fine alla notte di Frisco, ma il pogo e la goduria dei presenti sarà continuata, molto probabilmente, fino a mattina inoltrata. Capodanno on the road: il 1983 dei Metallica si conclude sul palco di Mount Vernon, con una scaletta lunga e scoppiettante. Apre Hit The Lights, naturalmente, seguono due pezzi di KEA quindi Fight Fire With Fire e Ride The Lightning. Col pubblico già sufficientemente invasato i Metallica fanno esplodere il thrash potente di Phantom Lord, No Remorse e Seek & Destroy. Whiplash crea scompigli tra gli assolo di Kirk e Cliff, Metal Militia è l'augurio di un 1984 sempre più metallico!
